Ceramic glaze formulation is one of the most complex areas of ceramics. To start with, one must choose a recipe. There are lots of sources with great photos, books and the internet, making the selection difficult. And after testing the recipe… the result is totally different ☹ Faced with this scenario, the question arises: what to do?
The starting point is one or more existing recipes found, for example, in books. These recipes are tested. May be adjusted and retested, till the expected result is reached. As for the adjustments, they rely on the analysis and prediction of results provided by an understanding of the role of oxides and by tools such as the unity formula and ratios.
There is no single method for learning how to make glazes. The method I propose is suitable for seeking specific colour and/or surface type solutions. How to achieve that specific shade of purple? How to achieve that level of transparency? How to identify and solve problems?
